The Beaufort Wind Scale is divided into 13 categories, each representing a range of wind speeds and their corresponding effects on the environment. The categories are as follows:0 - Calm: Air is still, smoke rises vertically.1 - Light air: Wind speed is 1-3 knots. Direction indicated by smoke but not by wind vanes.2 - Light breeze: Wind speed is 4-7 knots. Wind felt on face; leaves rustle; ordinary vanes moved by wind.3 - Gentle breeze: Wind speed is 8-12 knots. Leaves and small twigs in constant motion; wind extends light flag.4 - Moderate breeze: Wind speed is 13-18 knots. Dust and loose paper raised; small branches begin to move.5 - Fresh breeze: Wind speed is 19-24 knots. Small trees with leaves begin to sway; crested wavelets form on inland waters.6 - Strong breeze: Wind speed is 25-31 knots. Large branches in motion; whistling heard in overhead wires; umbrellas used with difficulty.7 - Moderate gale: Wind speed is 32-38 knots. Whole trees in motion; inconvenience felt when walking against the wind.8 - Fresh gale: Wind speed is 39-46 knots.
